Finding the right person to join your team can be a nerve-wracking process, but it doesn’t need to be! It can be a challenge to find someone to represent your business and deliver quality work that aligns with your standards, but there are some things you can proactively do to ensure you’ll attract an ideal candidate. 

1 // Create an Honest Job Listing That Speaks to Your Ideal Employee

To weed out the wrong applicants from the beginning, you’ll want to create a clear, personalized job listing. Share your business story within the listing. You’re building a business that stands on a passionate and creative foundation, so you want someone who can connect with that. Your listing should include some of your personality, allowing the right candidate to “click” with you and your company.

Do not sugar coat the role. While you don’t want to scare away people, you do want the right type of person for the job. Job listings are not only about attracting the right fit; They are also about repelling the wrong fit from the get-go.

Be upfront about the requirements, like certain qualifications and prior training. This will eliminate the possibility of having to allocate a large chunk of your valuable time to additional training. You’ll also want to highlight the day-to-day responsibilities as well as long-term projects. By doing this, potential applicants will have a solid grasp on all the responsibilities of the job.

2 // Design a Thorough Application

While you must ask some of the standard questions, make sure to include thought-provoking questions as well. Questions that prompt deeper responses can reveal personality traits that standard questions may not uncover.

Ask for both related and non-related job experience. Although some prior work may not be relevant to your company, the non-related job experience can show a person’s true work ethic and commitment.

Most applications ask for references, but it is your job to follow up with these references. Understanding your applicant’s past work history will provide you with insight into whether this person will be a good fit for your company.

3 // Manage an Effective Interview

To run the most effective interview, you will want to be well prepared. Make sure to have a copy of their completed job application on hand for reference throughout the interview. Ask why they envision working at your business. Make sure their answers are in line with the mission and passion of your business.

Don’t be afraid to bring up the “negative” topics. Ask about their challenges and past mistakes. Often these types of questions can show how people react in non-ideal situations. You may want your company to be roses and rainbows, but the truth is, there will be tough times. You need to know how a future employee will react when things get more difficult.

Finally, leave no rock unturned. The interview is a chance for both parties to put it all out on the table. Make sure you ask all the questions that you want and need to. Also, ask the applicant if they have any questions for you. They may have hesitations about working with you or confusion about your expectations. Opening the conversation to clear up these questions is very important, especially if creating an honest relationship with your team is important to you.

4 // Set Expectations Prior to Entering an Agreement

For the position to work for both parties, set clear expectations from the beginning. You will want to fully communicate both the pay and the schedule prior to entering an agreement. If overtime is a possibility, make sure the applicant is aware and accepting of it.

You will also want to take the time to review the employment agreement with the applicant. Sit down and review each responsibility with the candidate, making sure that they thoroughly understand. Before signing the agreement, make sure both parties are on the same page.

Despite what some business owners may think, finding the perfect fit for your company can be an easy and enjoyable task. The more of yourself you put into the process, the more effective the results will be. With the right application, a strong job listing, a great interview, and a clear set of expectations, you’ll find the ideal employee in no time!
